Refugee/Asylum Application

There are two main ways to apply for refugee/asylum: inside Canada and outside Canada.

Outside Canada

You can be sponsored by the Canadian government, a group of people or an organization, or by government and private sponsors. 

You must have the financial means to settle yourself in Canada. You will still need the UNHCR or a private sponsor group to refer you.

Inside Canada

If you cannot get referrals, then you need to submit an application yourself. In order to do so, you must first be presently in Canada. You can apply at the Port of Entry, or at an inland IRCC office.

You will need to complete the Basis of Claim form, which should include all necessary details to support your claim. You will also need to have supporting evidence and legal evidence from the National Document Package.

General timeline for inland refugee application is as follows:

1. Complete online application and submit
2. Acknowledgement of Claim, Interim Federal Health Program, and Medical Request within 1-5 days
3. First interview within 1 month
4. Second interview within 2 months
5. Hearing within 7-12 months
6. If your claim is accepted, you may apply for Permanent Residency, processing time is usually 12-18 months.
7. If your claim is accepted, you may apply for Travel Document, processing time is usually 20-30 days
8. If your claim is rejected, you may appeal.
